Portugal is very proud of its place in history during the 15th-18th centuries known as the Age of Discovery.  Study the map below and note the red areas which indicate Portugal 's territories then.

Famous explorers who represented Portugal during that time were Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus,  Henry the Navigator, Pedro Alvares Cabral, and Ferdinand Magellan.
