Melbourne: more impressions

Much like the United States, Australia has had a long and troubled history with its indigenous people. We had an introduction to this controversial topic on our first day in Australia.  We met Ben, an aboriginal guide, who took us through a traditional smoking ceremony to remind us of man's connection to the earth.  He then guided us through the Royal Botanic Gardens and showed us many plants that were used by the indigenous people for a variety of purposes.

If alleyways aren't used as canvases for street art, they are often "eat streets ." These are storefronts for restaurants or small shops that line each side of the alley. Customers can walk in and enjoy a meal or some fun shopping. Some eat streets are exclusively Italian, others are Greek and some are Chinese among others.

Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria. One of the most impressive places we visited was The State Library of Victoria. The interior was remarkably beautiful, and its art gallery was worth a visit of its own.

And, last, I want note how a major shopping mall was constructed around a shot tower built in 1888 making for a striking feature in the building.
