Interesting facts about Vietnam

About 8% of Vietnam's population is Catholic,  a result of French domination for about 100 years. Two famous buildings representing French architecture are the post office and Notre Dame Cathedral in Saigon.

  • Cars are very expensive in Vietnam.   They cost about 2 1/2 times what they do in the US.  The government taxes them heavily because the country's infrastructure can not support a lot of traffic.
  • All Vietnamese do 3 months of basic military training between the ages of 18-21.  China is their biggest foreign threat.  Our guide says the Vietnamese support the US presidential candidate who will be toughest on China.
  • The Vietnamese save money for 3 major life events : marriage, housing, and burying their parents.
  • Our guide calls the economic system in Vietnam "red capitalism".  There are millions of small business owners in the form of street vendors and a great deal of entrepreneurial enthusiasm.  But the government is one party, Communist.
